Today I have the free pattern for a crochet plant pot cover. These little pot covers are an easy way to upcycle a boring plant pot cheaply. They can be customisable too with lots of different crochet emojis…. or just leave the faces off – the choice is yours!
These crochet planters came about after a trip to local shop. I was browsing all the plant pots, and thought to myself – I can crochet something like that in yarn! Not only can I make this for a fraction of what the pot will cost, I can probably make about 10 in the same price of yarn as I can for one pot!

How do you make a plant pot cover?
It’s really easy to crochet a plant pot cover, the same principles apply to any size plant pot, and you can even make one without lots of maths!
My scientist mind would say take the pot, and work out the circumference (The outside measurement of the pot), which you can do, and make a starting chain that length.
The lazy crocheter in me, says chain long enough so that the chain will stretch around the base of the pot, and be “slightly too tight”.
Then the crochet designer in me says, but a chain can get all twisted, and I want a really straight edge, so I’ve got to use Foundation Double Crochet!
Combine all three approaches, and you can crochet a pot cover!

Top Tips for crocheting a Plant Pot Cover
For an indoor plant, you’ll need a pot with no holes in it – these can be expensive to start with.
Here I have an absolute gem of tip, depending on how big you plant is. You can use a normal grocery can! Yep, how cool is that, something that should be going in the rubbish / garbage, you can wash out and use as the base can.
For my Cosy Plant pot Cover – I used a tuna can to hold the liquid and a normal plant pot.
For these covers the actual pot is held in a 340g sweetcorn can – full washed and clean.
Now I know some people will be worried about how long a tin can last, well I have one that’s at least 5 years old, that is still fine. So you’ll probably find the plant will outgrown the pot before the tin is no good!
Old paint tins (emulsion) again fully washed, would be a great way to start with a bigger tin to decorate too!
How do you cover a plant pot in crochet?
These crochet patterns are all based on the same easy pot cover.
They are a great Advanced beginners project.
They use only a handful of crochet stitches, and are a great way to learn a couple of new stitches.
They use:
Foundation Double Crochet Stitch
Front Post Double crochet and Back Post Double crochet
Single Crochet
And the magic ring (for the eyes and checks of the emoji faces).
So, a great project for learning some new stitches, but you could also make them with a starting chain, plus 3, and do a row of DC rather than FDC, and you could also skip the FPDC, BPDC steps too!
Bottomless crochet pot cover pattern
I crocheted these without a bottom for 3 reasons:
1: I didn’t see the point in using crochet on the bottom of the pot no one would see,
2: I didn’t want to spend the time crocheting something no one would see
3: I didn’t want to use the yarn to cover something no one would see
By making them bottomless, you can make a lot more pot covers quickly and they’ll cost less too!
If you do want to make them with a bottom, you’ll need to crochet a circle first.

Once you have the circle – you’ll need to change the direction of the stitches to give a nice straight edge just like in my handy crochet stair caddy basket pattern >>>
But for these pots we are starting with a Foundation Double Crochet.
Yarn Choice
Any yarn could be used to make a crochet pot cover.
I have chosen a Aran weight cotton yarn for the main pot, then to get the finer details of the emoji faces, I’ve used a DK yarn.
1 ball of each of the Drops paris will probably make between 5-6 pot covers, making these a great craft show seller – as they are super quick, and use little yarn. For the emjoi faces, I’d use Stash yarn, but if you want the exact yarn I’ve used, it’s Drops Muskat.

How to make an Easy Crochet Plant Pot Cover
Abbreviations – USA terms
BPDC – Back Post Double Crochet
ch – chain
DC – Double crochet
FPDC – Front Post Double crochet
FDC – Foundation Double crochet
SC – Single crochet
SS – Slip Stitch
st (s) – stitch (es)
YO – Yarn Over
Yarn
Drops Paris – for the pot covers (Aran, 75m per 50g ball, 100% cotton)
Drops Muskat – for emoji faces (DK, 100m per 50g ball, 100% mercerised cotton)
Tiny bit of white yarn
Hooks
Sizing
9cm x 8.5cm (height x diameter)
Tension/ Gauge
Tension is not critical for this project but sts should be tight enough to avoid pot showing through.
Special Stitches Foundation Double crochet
Foundation Double Crochet (FDC): Ch3 (counts as first DC), YO, insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, *YO, pul, YO, draw through 1 loop on hook ( ch made), [YO, draw through 2 loops on hook] twice (DC made) **, insert hook in last ch made; rep from * for number of sts required, ending last rep at **.
Front Post Double crochet (FPDC), YO, Insert hook around the post of the stitch – front to back – DC as normal.
BPDC – Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC), YO Insert hook around the post of the stitch, back to front, DC as normal.
Pattern Notes
The crochet pot cover is worked in joined rnds, join with a sl st to first st of rnd. Beg ch does count as a st for the first 3 rnds. Then the cover is made using the amigurumi method. Leave long tails on parts to be sewn.
Crochet Plant Pot cover – make 3
Rnd 1 With MC and larger hook, 34FDC. SS to join and working in the rnd.
Rnd 2-3: Ch3, * 1 FPDC, 1 BPDC; rep from * to end. SS to join
Now working in the Amigurumi style, in a spiral without slip stitching or turning chains. Use a st marker or waste yarn to keep track of the first st of each rnd. Tension is not critical for this project but sts should be tight enough to avoid pot showing through.
Rnd 4-6: Ch1, SC around, change to Yarn B on last YO. 34 sts
Rnd 6-12: SC around. fasten off
Cheeks (make 2)
Rnd 1: With smaller hook, and Yarn C and working into a magic ring, 6SC, sl st join. Fasten off. 6 sts
Open Eyes (make 2)
Rnd 1: With smaller hook and Yarn D and working into a magic ring, 4SC, sl st join. Fasten off. 4 sts
Making up
Sew the cheeks onto the pot cover on row 2 of the Off white, 7 stitches apart. Position the eyes (where applicable) above the cheeks, and sew, using white thread – add an accent running stitch to each one.
Using the picture as a guide, sew the mouths (and eyes).
