Todays post is about all about a crochet peony. I love the peony flower, it’s so pretty, so I thought to myself, hey, lets make a crochet one! This is a really large crochet flower, it’s really easy to make and it does look like a peony!
Peonies are the most beautiful flowers, that are in season end of May to June in the UK, and they are absolutely stunning, but they don’t last very long!
So make a crochet one, it’ll last forever, and it’s easier than it looks!

Easy Crochet Peony Pattern
This crochet peony is really simple to crochet.
You’ll need to know how to:
- Make a magic ring
- Chain
- Double crochet (US terms) Treble crochet (UK terms)
- The different loops on the stitch – Back loop and Front loop
- Slip stitch
And that is it! Exactly the same skills you’d need to make a daisy, just more stitches!

What can you use Crochet Peonies for?
Absolutely anything! I’ve used them to decorate the little Russian Cloche hats.
But more recently as the centre piece decoration for my Summer Wreath Pattern.
Yarn for a Crochet Peony
Now, usually I’m one for saying it’s a stashbuster, and you can use any yarn with an appropiate hook, but I’m not going to say this this time!
I really believe it’s the yarn that makes the difference with this crochet flower, and you really need to use a mercersied cotton to get the same effect.
My go too every time would be:
>>>Yarnart Begonia fine mercerised cotton

How do you make a Crochet Flower Bigger?
For this crochet flower, there are 2 ways to make it bigger.
More rounds, or bigger/ thicker yarn!
More rounds will make it bigger, but you’ll need to adjust the stitches, to make it curly/wavy on different rounds.

This will give you a bigger flower, but it will also use a lot more yarn!
Use a different thicker yarn, but you’ll probably not get a mercerised cotton more than a DK weight, and it’ll be a bit “chunky”
My advice, keep the Peony as it is following this pattern using the yarn listed is what really makes this flower look like it does.

How long does it take to crochet a peony?
The honest answer is a LOT longer than it looks. I’d set aside about 2-3 hours for this large crochet flower.
It takes so long as it has so many stitches per round!
