So you fancy making a granny square blanket or afghan- super colourful, and a perfect beginners project? Well, look no further. The Nobrainer Crochet-along (CAL) was a series of patterns released from March 2020 – in the midst of covid, but actually this turned out to be really good.
Lots of people learnt how to crochet, and the granny square is the perfect beginners project. If you don’t know how to make a granny square, but are looking to make a blanket, you are in luck as I have an absolute beginners tutorial on how to make a granny square.

Granny squares are the perfect place to start with crochet for a number of reasons – which in turn makes this blanket perfect too.
- They are very repetitive, meaning you get really good, really quickly!
- They only use 3 stitches. (Chain, Double Crochet (USA terms) and a Slip Stitch)
- New stitches are made into “Spaces” rather than other stitches, so it’s really easy to see where you need to place them

I thought when I made this blanket – that
1: we all had enough to think of so something that didn’t require any thought would be good.
2: With our busy lives 2 squares a week would be good.
Oh how this has changed in the last few weeks!
So bear with me, as now I want something to totally take my mind off things that are happening in the world.
And I have so much time to think about everything and anything!
So rather than mull over whats going on everywhere – lets just crochet!

If you need any yarn (and lets be honest – it’s always worth a look)
I used Stylecraft yarn, special DK as it’s a great soft yarn, and very affordable at about £2 ($2.50) a ball
(Or raid your stash!!!!) This could be a great stash buster after all.
So week 3 Patterns,
If you need the yarn colours I’ve used and then head over to here. It’s got all the info, how to do the squares, and the previous weeks squares if you want to end up with exactly the same blanket as me.
