Theres a story behind these, we’ve been thinking about buying a coffee table for a quite a while, and then on a little trip to IKEA (to get something completely different – anyone else do that?), Mr OTH bought a coffee table.
A cheap one, just to see if we actually like it and we use it, before we go and spend a small fortune getting one made to match my desk and dining room table.
We put on these great coasters we were given for Christmas, from our trip to Australia, and as soon as you picked up your glass, the coaster stuck to the bottom, and then landed with a big thud, almost breaking.
I walked into the room, and Mr OTH says, I don’t suppose you any crochet coasters, or could make some for us, and explained the whole scenario above.
Well, would you actually believe it, I did have some coasters!
I’d made them a couple of years ago, as a submission to a magazine …….. that I stuffed them in a bag and forgot about them – until now!
Right on queue, I said “Actually, I do”.
I made them out of Scheepjes Catona Cotton, and at the time the brief was “Hugge”, and the colour palate was greys, blues.
So I made these, alternating colours, using half double crochet, and slip stitches.
So who wants another free pattern?
1 ball Scheepjes Catona in Metal grey (Yarn A)
1 ball Scheepjes Catona in Petrol Blue (Yarn B)
Terms – USA Terms
HDC – Half Double crochet
SS – Slip stitch
ST (STS) – stitch / stitches

Round 1: With Yarn A, make a magic loop, ch2 (does not count as a stitch throughout), and make 10 HDC in the ring, SS to join. [10sts]
Round 2: Ch2, 2HDC in each stitch around, SS to join. [20sts]
Round 3: Ch2, 2HDC in first stitch, 1 HDC in next stitch, repeat around, on the last stitch make the last YO in yarn B. SS to join. [30sts]
Round 4: Ch2, *2HDC in the first st, 1 HDC in each of the next 2 sts * . *-* repeat around. SS to join [40sts]
Round 5: Ch2, *2SC in the first stitch, 1 HDC in each of the next 3 sts * *-* repeat around, on the last stitch make the last YO in yarn A. SS to join. [50sts]
Round 6: Ch2, * 2 HDC in the first stitch, 1 HDC in each of the next 4 sts*. *-*repeat around [60sts]
Round 7: Ch2, * 2 HDC in the first stitch, 1 HDC in each of the next 5 sts*. *-* repeat around. Fasten off, weave in ends. [70sts]
Round 8: Using yarn B, SS around the top of the stitches from round 7. Fasten off, weave in ends. [70sts].
As per coaster above, but alternate the colours.
Start with Yarn B, change to yarn A on the end of round 3, then back to yarn B on the end of round 5. SS with Yarn A.
There we have it, 2 coasters, in record time! Now to make a pink and yellow one for the pink and blue ones…. and just because they look good!
Well you didn’t think I’d wait did you? Two more coasters finished this morning!
